“If you’re gonna be a writer, you gotta sweat.”—James Carl Nelson (Facebook)

Hey, there CNFers, what is goin’ on? You fired up? Comin’ in hot it’s James Carl Nelson, author of The Polar Bear Expedition: The Heroes of America’s Forgotten Invasion of Russia, 1918-1919.

Okay, we here are The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I talk to badass writers, filmmakers, and producers about the art and craft of telling true stories. It’s here we learn how they became the artists they are, the struggles they deal with, and the routines that allow them to get the work done, so you can apply those tools of mastery to your own work.

A little housekeeping, I mean, you know the drill by now, go on and subscribe to the show at Apple Podcasts, Google Podcast, Spotify, and Stitcher and share this across your platforms.

That’s really more valuable than anything. Be sure to tag the show @CNFPod and I’ll happily give you a fist bump or headbanging devil horns. You can leave a review on iTunes if you like or even email the show creativenonfictionpodcast at gmail dot com to let me know what you liked.

So James Carl Nelson is here and he’s made his bones with four books on World War I, a war that’s coming out of WWII’s shadow. All war is horrific, but WWI was particularly heinous. Its great failure was that it was supposed to end all wars. Nope. It most certainly did not.

James is also the author I Will Hold: The Story of USMC Legend Clifton B. Cates, from Belleau Wood to Victory in the Great War; Five Lieutenants: The Heartbreaking Story of Five Harvard Men Who led America to Victory in World War I; and The Remains of Company D: A Story of the Great War. He received the Marine Corps Heritage Foundations Colonel Joseph Alexander Award for Biography in 2017 and is a former staff writer for the Miami Herald. He is a Chicago Bears fan.

One more thing, be sure to stay tuned to the end of the show where I have an exciting offer to make. But you’ll have to listen through the entire show.

Let’s keep the conversation going on Twitter. Tag me and the show @BrendanOMeara and @CNFPod to let me know what you liked.
